On 10 June 2026 CY-ESM participated in the Mosquito-Borne Diseases Conference at the Filoxenia Conference Center, organized under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026. The event opened with addresses by the Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, and Ole Heuer (ECDC).
European experts shared insights on epidemiology, vector surveillance, and preparedness. Key takeaways for our work include:
Climate Change & Globalization: Rising temperatures create ideal conditions for mosquitoes and diseases to spread into Europe.
Local Transmission: Dengue, chikungunya, and West Nile virus are increasingly transmitted locally within Europe (not only imported), requiring rapid response.
Insecticide Resistance: Invasive Aedes mosquitoes are expanding and developing resistance, calling for science-based control.
Cyprus on the Front Line: Facing a dual Aedes aegypti / Aedes albopictus invasion, Cyprus utilizes a One Health response mechanism.
Conclusion: Coordinated data connecting human, animal, and environmental health is vital for real protection. This drives CY-ESM’s work to build an integrated One Health surveillance system in Cyprus, delivered by our national consortium:
