CY-ESM Kick-Off Event

The official launch of the CY-ESM (Cyprus Empowered Surveillance Mechanism) project took place on 26 February 2025 in Limassol. The aim of the project is to create a modern epidemiological surveillance mechanism for infectious diseases, enhancing public health in Cyprus.

CY-ESM is implemented by a consortium of the Medical and Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health, the Medical School of the University of Cyprus, the Centre of Excellence for Research and Innovation “KIOS” and the Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agriculture. The coordinators are the Medical and Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health and the Medical School of the University of Cyprus. The project is co-financed by the European programme EU4Health, with a budget of 3.5 million euros.

During the event, the strategy and objectives of the project were presented, with the participation of national actors. The Minister of Health and the Rector of the University of Cyprus addressed greetings through representatives, while the meeting was also greeted by the project coordinators from the Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health, the Medical School of the University of Cyprus and the Centre of Excellence for Research and Innovation “KIOS”.

This was followed by speeches by representatives of the European Executive Agency for Health and Digital Development (HaDEA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), with a focus on the actions of the EU4Health programme and strategies to strengthen disease surveillance in the European Union (EU). The crucial role of innovation and technologies in the prevention and protection of public health at European level was highlighted.

The presentations of the CY-ESM research team highlighted the main axes of the project, aiming at an integrated public health surveillance system. It is based on the “One Health” approach, which connects human, animal and environmental health data. It includes full digitalization and real-time data analysis, strengthening partnerships at national and international level, training of health professionals in innovative surveillance methods, as well as the development of early warning systems to protect the population.
