The EU4Health co-funded CY-ESM (Cyprus Empowered Surveillance Mechanism) project has successfully completed the Training Day on “Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases and Public Health Interventions”. The training day was the 1st Training Cycle for Health Professionals in Epidemiology and Surveillance. It took place on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at The Classic Hotel in Nicosia. It was organised by the Medical and Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health and co-organised by the Medical School, University of Cyprus (UCY).

The training activity is part of Work Package 6 (WP6) – Capacity Building and Training. WP6 aims to strengthen the knowledge and skills of healthcare and public health professionals. In doing so, it supports the development of a modern, resilient and integrated infectious disease surveillance system in Cyprus. The event drew wide participation from physicians across Cyprus. This turnout reflects the medical community’s strong interest in contributing actively to national epidemiological surveillance.

The programme covered:

  • digital surveillance systems,
  • vector-borne diseases (mosquitoes),
  • the management of measles and meningitis cases,
  • the epidemiological situation of HIV infection in Cyprus,
  • the management of tuberculosis in vulnerable and mobile populations.

A highlight of the event was the award ceremony for the Sentinel Network physicians. The awards recognise their valuable contribution to epidemiological surveillance and the protection of public health in Cyprus.

The presentations highlighted the urgent need to link everyday clinical practice more closely with public health. Technological upgrades to surveillance systems gain real value when they are combined with the vigilance and clinical suspicion of primary care physicians. These are the key to early detection and prevention.
